How to Template a Custom Cushion for the Best Fit
Some custom cushion projects need more than standard width and depth measurements. If your seating area has curves, angles, clipped corners, or an unusual built-in shape, a full-size template is the best way to help us create a cushion that fits properly.
Templates are especially helpful for custom bench cushions, window seat cushions, boat cushions, RV cushions, built-in seating, irregular patio furniture cushions, and other cushion shapes that are not a simple rectangle or square.
When Should You Make a Template?
A template is recommended for curved cushions, angled cushions, clipped corners, built-in seating, window seat cushions, boat or RV cushions, irregular patio furniture cushions, or any shape that cannot be measured as a simple rectangle or square.
What You’ll Need
- Kraft paper, contractor paper, or taped paper sheets
- Measuring tape
- Marker
- Painter’s tape
- Straight edge, if needed
- Scissors
Step 1: Cover the Seating Area
Lay paper over the full area where the cushion will sit. If needed, tape multiple sheets together so the entire surface is covered. Make sure the paper lays flat and reaches all edges, corners, curves, and angles.
Step 2: Trace the Shape
Carefully trace the full outline of the seating area onto the paper. Follow the actual shape as closely as possible, including curves, angled sides, clipped corners, or irregular edges.
Step 3: Label the Template
Write the following details directly on the template:
- Your full name
- Front edge
- Back edge
- Requested cushion thickness
- Any special notes about placement, curves, corners, or angles
Clear labels help our team understand how the cushion should sit in the space.
Step 4: Add Measurements
Measure the width and depth in more than one place and write those measurements on the template. These measurements help us double-check the pattern before moving forward.
Step 5: Cut and Test the Fit
Cut along the traced line and place the template back onto the seating area. Make sure it lays flat and fits the space the way you want the finished cushion to fit.
Step 6: Send Your Template
Once complete, label the template clearly and include your contact information. You can roll or fold the template, but please keep all markings visible.
Our team will review your template and reach out if anything else is needed.
