Measuring Custom Cushions
This measuring guide is designed to help you gather the correct dimensions for your furniture frames or existing cushions. Use it when ordering custom cushions, replacement cushion covers, patio cushions, outdoor chair cushions, bench cushions, chaise lounge cushions, sofa cushions, or pillow covers.
Every furniture piece is a little different, so careful measuring is important. A small difference in width, depth, height, or cushion thickness can affect how the finished cushion sits on the frame. Taking the time to measure properly helps your new cushions fit better, look more polished, and provide the comfort you expect.

Important Measuring Tips
- Measure carefully, because custom cushions are made to the dimensions you provide.
- If you are measuring existing cushions, confirm they are the original cushions for the furniture whenever possible.
- Measure from seam to seam. Do not include extra puffiness beyond the stitched edge.
- Avoid assuming your cushions are a standard size. Outdoor cushions, patio cushions, and replacement cushions can vary widely by brand and frame style.
- If measuring the furniture frame, measure the full space where the cushion will sit.
- Custom cushions are made specifically for your order and are non-returnable.
- Contact our customer service team before ordering if you are unsure about any measurement.
Measuring Chair Cushions or Chair Frames
Watch our quick tutorial to get started:
Measuring a Chair Frame
If the original cushion is missing or no longer usable, measure the chair frame directly. This is common when ordering replacement patio chair cushions, outdoor dining chair cushions, or custom seat cushions.
- Width – Measure between the arms across the seat area. Tip: Some chair seats are wider in the front than the back, so measure both areas if the shape changes.
- Depth – Measure from the front edge of the seat to the back of the seat.
- Back Height – Measure from the seat area up to the top of the chair back. Tip: Remember to account for the thickness of the seat cushion when choosing the finished back cushion height.
- Thickness – Decide the cushion thickness you want, measured from top to bottom while uncompressed.

Measuring Existing Chair Cushions Seat & Back
Older cushions may have shifted, softened, or flattened over time, so lay each cushion on a flat surface before measuring. For the most accurate dimensions, measure seam to seam rather than measuring the rounded or puffed areas.
- Seat Width – Measure across the front of the cushion from the right seam to the left seam. Tip: If the cushion is wider in the front than the back, measure both widths.
- Seat Depth – Measure from the front seam to the back seam.
- Seat Thickness – Measure the uncompressed thickness from top to bottom.
- Back Width – Measure across the widest part of the back cushion. Tip: Some back cushions are wider at the top than at the bottom, so measure both if needed.
- Back Height – Measure from the bottom seam to the top seam. Tip: If the insert has lost its shape, removing the cover from the fill may help you measure more accurately.
Measuring Chaise Lounge Cushions or Chaise Frames
Watch our quick tutorial to get started:
Measuring a Chaise Lounge Frame Seat & Back
Chaise lounge cushions often include multiple sections, bends, or hinged areas. When measuring for custom chaise lounge cushions or replacement chaise cushions, pay close attention to each section of the frame.
- Width – Measure across the widest part of the chaise seat. Tip: If the width changes from the back section to the middle or front, measure each section.
- Seat Length – Measure from the front edge of the seat to the seat bend or the start of the back section.
- Back Height or Length – Measure from the seat bend to the top of the backrest. If the chaise lies completely flat, measure the full back length.
- Thickness – Choose the desired cushion thickness.
Measuring Existing Chaise Cushions Seat & Back
- Seat Width – Measure across the front seam. If the chaise has separate seat sections, measure each one individually.
- Seat Length – Measure from the front seam to the back seam. Repeat this for each section if the cushion is divided.
- Seat Thickness – Measure the uncompressed thickness.
- Back Length – Measure from the fold, break, or hinge seam to the top seam.
- Back Thickness – Measure the uncompressed thickness of the back cushion.
Measuring Sofa or Loveseat Cushions
Measuring a Loveseat Frame
For loveseat cushions, outdoor sofa cushions, sectional cushions, or deep seating replacement cushions, start by measuring the seating area of the frame.
- Overall Width – Measure from the inside of one arm to the inside of the other arm. Tip: We can divide this measurement based on how many seat cushions you want, such as two cushions or three cushions.
- Seat Depth – Measure from the front edge of the seat to the backrest.
- Back Height – Measure from the seat area to the top of the frame. Tip: Consider the finished seat cushion thickness when deciding the back cushion height.
- Thickness – Choose the desired cushion depth or thickness.
Measuring Sofa Cushions
Watch our quick tutorial to get started:
- Seat Width of Each Cushion – Measure across the front seam. Measure every cushion if the sizes vary.
- Seat Depth – Measure from the front seam to the back seam.
- Seat Thickness – Measure the uncompressed thickness.
- Back Height – Measure from the bottom seam to the top seam.
- Back Width of Each Cushion – Measure across the widest part of each back cushion. Measure every cushion if the widths are not the same.
Measuring Pillows and Pillow Covers
Watch our quick tutorial to get started:
- Measure each side of the pillow. Diagonal measurements are not accurate for ordering.
- Place the pillow on a flat surface and gently pull one side taut.
- Measure from corner to corner on that side. Repeat on the other side if the pillow is not square.
- Round up to the nearest whole inch.
- Since pillows can lose fullness over time, you may want to size up depending on the look you prefer.
- Common pillow sizes include: 16×16, 18×18, 20×20, 22×22, 24×24, 12×20, 12×24
- If you already have a pillow insert, ordering a pillow cover about 1 inch smaller can help create a fuller appearance.

Measuring Odd-Shaped Cushions
If your cushion has curves, angled backs, cutouts, rounded corners, notches, or another specialty shape, it may need extra details before we can create the right fit.
For these projects, we recommend using our dedicated guide for measuring and templating odd-shaped cushions. It walks you through when a paper template may be needed, what photos to provide, and how to share the details our team needs to review your custom cushion project.
Visit our Odd-Shaped Cushion Measuring Guide.
This extra step may take a little more time, but it helps ensure your custom cushion is made as accurately as possible for your furniture frame or original cushion shape.
Optional Cushion Details
- Add Velcro ties or fabric ties to help secure cushions to the furniture frame.
- Choose double welt or cording for a more finished, decorative edge.
Special Note About Striped Fabric
- Let us know which direction you want the stripes to run.
- Long bench cushions with vertical stripes may require additional seams.
